MERCEDES BENZ SLK R170 Emergency brake and rear wheels question

When I did the rear brakes awhile ago it seems like the back tires would not come of until the emergency brake was released. I think...it was awhile ago and I have done a lot of brake jobs since then. Is this correct Does the emergency brake lock the rear wheels on

Oh the handbrake why do you call it an emergency brake. Do you not use it when you park the car The last thing you would want to do in an emergency is pull the handbrake or youd be doing a 360.

Our slk is our first Automatic transmission and I use the handbrake when parked but was wondering if perhaps that was unusual. Obviously emergency brake is something that has become common usage in the US. It has always been called handbrake here in the UK even in the manual for our 1935 Austin 10 there are two brakes the footbrake operated with your foot and the handbrake operated with your hand.

MERCEDES BENZ SLK R170 Big Problem Emergency Handbrake Broken

Hey i think i have a big problem on my hands i was parking on a slight hill yesterday so a went to pull the handbrake lever only to discover that it odidnt make the signature sound and will not stay in the up position.. if i pull it up it slaps right back down again Has anyone else ever experienced a broken hand brake emergency brake what do i have to do how many thousands should i be prepared to

Im not sure if the slk is similar but I would imagine that emergencyhand brakes arent [i]too[i] different from one car to the next. The mechanic told her that if the device had just slipped out of place it was fairly simple to snap back into place not very costly. However if the part was actually broken it would require a new replacement part which would up the cost significantly. Unfortunately it

inside the drum section (center section) of the rear brake disc. The hydraulic disc brakes are a seperate system and will NOT be affected by a hand brake failure. If the clicking sound you normally hear is not there when you pull on the hand brake but the resistance is you my only have a problem with the ratchet part of the hand brake (the lever part). If there is no resistance you may have a cable

thanx bruce i have no sound and no resistance when i raise the lever..thus i belive its the rear cable.. im glad to learn that it has nothing to do with the normal brakes.

MERCEDES BENZ SLK R170 adjusting the emergency handbrake

MERCEDES BENZ SLK R171 Had to emergency brake... normal for rear brakes to activate as well

So a chick in her golf decided to just stop in the middle of the road while I was driving behind her. For no reason whatsoever [B)] After applying the brakes hard (and hearing the ABS go off as well) I stopped inches from her bumper... Anyway once I went to drive off again I could feel my rear wheels also still being locked and a crunch crunch noise was heard as the brakes let go once again. Is this

No the car definitely did not like the chick and neither did I. I was under the impression that its usually the front brakes which are activated and the rear ones only via the handbrake...

Quote Shinigami - 1262005 326 PM I was under the impression that its usually the front brakes which are activated and the rear ones only via the handbrake... ...suprised at you Shini - I woulld have thought you would have known all of this plus the diagonally split dual circuit braking (if one circuit goes you still get one front and one opposite rear braking system working (through the frontrear balence valve))

Quote Shinigami - 1262005 1026 AM No the car definitely did not like the chick and neither did I. If youll look at the calipers youll see hydraulic lines to them.

MERCEDES BENZ SLK R170 new to mercedes

I just bought my 2000 slk230Kompressor Friday. This seems to be an excellent site with alot of helpful people in the mercedes community. Its a 5speed manual Metallic gloss black (im not sure on the exact name of what it is) 6 spoke rims (i dont know if theyre premiumalloyetc.) Cream color interior 81k miles is there anything i should be prepared for Besides an exciting journey with it..

The basics of the R170 are the same as the W202 (same enginetransbrakesdiffsuspension.) so a Haynes book (3511) is handy - there is no manual in hard copy for the slk but copies of benz WIS disks can be found on Ebay - I got the set of 2 - never use them - dreadful to navigate but may help one day Auto trans-change between 30-50k is good as insurance (jerky first couple of cold changes - normal)
