box & coupler new thermostat water pump. Things to note Buy the pin puller from zdmak.com. Cheap and makes the R&R of the chain rails a snap. When you remove everything dont always trust your 0 indicator on the dampner because the chain could have streched and it may not be TDC. Use it to get it close but find it using a piston stop. MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 Timing chain guide rail fragment worth M117 engine tear down

I completely understand the risk of having an object like a broken guide rail floating around in ones oil pan or -- worse -- hitching a ride on the chain it used to protect in an interruption engine like the one in my 1978 450SL. But what is a DIY mechanic to do if a thin small (116-in. x 14-in. x 1-in.) section of the rail that shrouds one of the retaining pins is revealed to be missing (as pictured

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 Officially Lost with this timing job

I replaced the timing chain guide rails tensioner tensioner liner. When I started this job the car did run very well good just for reference. That was with a old wore out tensioner broken guide rail and stretched chain. I lined it up at TDC and pulled the dizzy. That was pointing to number one on the rotor when pulled. I did all my work and took my time I doubt I jumped a tooth anywhere I was very

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 Timing chain

Hi every one thinking I should look into changing out my timing chain and top guides. I live in Tucson AZ and was wondering what the going rate for AZ cost. Ive heard any where from 1.3k to 1.8k I know there are other things that might drive up the cost but just want to get a ball park price if all things went well durring changout. Oh ya 1985 380sl runs great with 180k miles. Rick

I just completed pricing the parts for this. I checked online MB dealer sites and AH AZ. The only non MB parts I factored in were the AH timing chain (OEM) and cam gears (SWAG). With shipping and handling it totaled right at 400.00. MB still sells the lining for the tensioner rail. Your model uses a different chain part number. Here is my list. (I did not add in the pins for the sliding rails in the above total)

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 99% Complete

Thought Id share with the recent windshield change the resto of my 88 560 SL is now 99% completed. All that remains is dash console wood refinishing which should be completed by next week. A relative long (1yr) and expensive () process the car runsdrives and looks (original paint) great as it rolls past the 143k mile post...and much of the work would not have been as successful without the guidance

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 AirFuel Control in Park vs Drive Gears

This could be a simple question But Im operating on the theres no stupid question principle. Is there a different way our engine ICUICVJetronic systems govern the airfuel mixtures in Park and Drive gears I ask because my 85 380 SL has a curious way of being smooth in D but after long drive once put in P jumps 300-400rpm. Replaced ICV recently but did not cure issue and knocking around ICU area doesnt

I dont really know how a k or ke jetsystem works but on the D-Jets there are two completely different sections in the ECU. One for idle mixture control (throttle closed) and another for load mixture control (throttle open). At idle the ECU makes adjustments to minimize emissions. KE-Jets (I think that is what an 85 has) likely achieve something similar but in a different way. At idle the ECU would

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 COST OF REPAIRS 560SL

Thought Id start a general thread on the cost of repairs hopefully to both share and learn from others what to expect when doing repairs or having repairs made including estimates. I do so hoping others will add to this thread their own experience including similar list of parts changesrepairs made and costs. Disclaimer I am aware I could have likely purchased a car (560SL) with lessor miles and in

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 Is this normal

I can freely move the shifter on my 88 560sl without having the key in the ignition. Is this normal Concerning when parking on a hill and the shifter gets bumped I guess another reason to use the parking brake often.

Thanks for the reply. I was just making sure there wasnt some kind of interlock mechanism missing. Im just starting to enjoy driving the car more since I completed my work installing the timing chain guides and tensioner. I purchased the car in november and its been a long winter I focused more on the gear shift today as I parked the car on an incline and thought about what would happen if that shifter got bumped Have any of you heard of that happening often

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 560SL from ebay...

...So I bought an 87 560SL on ebay. No I didnt drive it and a valuable lesson has been learned. Seller advertises it as a car thats in great shape with impecable history everything works lists all the things are have been done and are new etc. Car looks great Car arrives and white smoke billows from exhaust as its being unloaded from carrier. I take the car to the mechanic and just find out that it

Buyers feedback vs Sellers feedback. Here is all I read from the description that is not boiler plate - two owner - extensive maintenance history (has some records) - runs as shifts gears (as a running car should) - handles well (subjective comment) - no accidents (reported in car fax) - does not smoke burn. (What is smoke burn) - looks like he is trying to say that it does not smoke or drop any fluids

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 72 350SL Injectors not PulsingSquirting

Hello We have a 72 350SL (107.044) with the pulse-injection jetronic fuel delivery system. 1) We have spark 2) We have fuel pressure to the rails 3) Fuel pump works Problem None of the injectors are pulsing. All fuses are good. We hooked a noid light up to all injectors and the noid does not light. Does anyone have any ideas Im wondering if we swap out with a new distributor maybe the impulse trigger could be bad Also thinking the computer might be bad. Any ideas would be great Thanks

If it looks like trigger pointsare your problem then I have a few extra sets. The trigger points are in the bottom of the distributor and are easiest to remove replace with the distributor out. But before you remove the distributor take a few pictures of the rotor position because you will want it is the same position when you put it back in. Also make note that you can move the rotor a little bit

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 Need Help Buying 560SL

Im a new member and could really use your help in purchasing the right 560SL. Ive been lurking in this forum for the past month and Ive read the postings by Peachy. Its great to know that you were very helpful with all her questions. I hope you can do the same for me. So for the past 5 weeks Ive been actively looking for a redpalomino 560sl. Ive contacted a number of sellers and even test driven several

In a short amount of time I have a generous amount of replies. Thank you all for your recommendations. Yes I have read previously from this forum to go for the low 100000 miles since the owners have probably already completed some of the major services. The following are my perspective purchases and Ive been comparing them side by side in condition (both mechanically and cosmetically) Car 1 - 1988

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 380SL Replacement Radiator

My 84 has a couple of pinholes in the radiator and seeps at the water pump. Researching parts suppliers reveals two radiators -- one for like 500 (Mag-Mar) and the other for like 200 (Silla). Why such a big difference Water pumps seem uniformly priced around 200. This is part of a planned upgrade which includes distributor cap and rotor ignition wires and plugs timing chain tensioner and guides. On this last item what is the specific name for those guides

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 New Megasquirted 280 m110

I while ago I was contacted by a person who had read my blog where I describe how I replaced my mercedes 280 SLs fuel and ignition system to a modern one (MegaSquirt) which probably most of you know by now... He had a 280 SE -82 (w126) with the same m110 engine and asked me if I could help him do the same I invited him and last week he drove about 400 km to get some help from me to do the same. Before

Ive been interested in doing this as a future project on a 380. Im sure that there is easily mined gold in the ignition system. Most Megasquirts (including yours I think) use FORD EDIS-type parts. When Ford went to this system they reported 5-10% improvement in mileage and lower emissions from this improvement alone. I attribute this to several things one of the most obvious being really accurate spark

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 78 450sl Will Not Start After Stalling

I have a 78 450sl that stalled while driving at slow rate of speed and will not re-start. Not even with starting fluidether. The breakdown was unremarkable although I recall being at a complete stop accelerating for a second or less and then hitting the brakes somewhat hard. Thats the precise moment when the engine stopped. Compression is good and so is the spark. The car has about 350000 miles and

Well I can believe this scenario sure beats the it was an act of God theory. Yes I something that would suddenly completely sop the camshaft from turning would throw enough force thruout the timing chain assembly to break parts such as the gear teeth and those crappy plastic guides. Regarding the head damage the fact that the engine was turning at a slow RPM is marginally helpful in preventing additional

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 Feels like a governor at 3500 rpm

I have a 79 450sl white with blue. The production number is 56341. You guys did a great job of walking me through a crazy runaway starter. Problem solved car running really well. Next issue. Every time i hit 3500 rpms the thing seems to shut down. It feels just like a governor on a Honda VTX 1800 i had when i over-reved the engine. Tach bounces. Power lost. Doesnt matter how I get to 3500 rpms. I can

MERCEDES BENZ SL 107 So far not a big M116 fan- tell me about M110s

Well I am up to my eyeballs in an M116 timing chain renew and I am not thrilled with the eventual prospect of this engine (with 145K) crapping out on me for whatever reason. I am 56 and this is my first V8 ( I think I have only had 2 V6s and all the other 11 currently are straights) and just cant seem to deal with the lack of access. So theres this M110 in the boneyard that seems to have compression
