Quote Originally Posted by skiwee75 replacing passenger side cv shaft and intermediate shaft came out with it where is the best place to buy oneis there a way to get old one out or is it stuck for good The intermediate shaft usually rusts to the CV axle so tightly that they cant be separated. And if you do get them apart the shaft and its splines will be damaged enough you have to replace it anyway.

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Front Drive-shaft Confusion

I bought a 2002 liberty 3.7AT 4x4 about a month ago. While checking some things out I noticed some play in the u-joint at the front differential and play in the slip joint on the drive-shaft which is hopefully the cause of the roaring sound Im getting at 30 mph. My confusion lies with finding a replacement drive-shaft and u-joints. Im not finding a drive-shaft that looks like mine. What I have found

Someone along the way took out the driveshaft that was suppose to be in there and replaced it with one that has U-Joints. Have to take it out hard to say what joints they used . Some think its stronger but..... bottom picture is what its suppose to look like

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Questions about steering intermediate shaft

There is a worn rubber bushing in my steering intermediate shaft where the red oval is in the diagram below I guess I have to replace the entire shaft assembly rather than just the affected part And how difficult is it to do The FSM makes it seem relatively simple and I guess that with the fan removed the access would be good but Im wary of hidden traps...

I can tell you the bottom connection (linkage retaining bolt-13mm) comes apart really easy ... Ive only tackled it from the rack down so cant be of more help than that.

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE How To Install Frankenlift II & Als 4.5 Arms on CRD KJ

Decided it was time to make a few improvements on the 05 CRD I picked up last summer out in NH. Looked around the web there are a few write ups - but were not as complete as I would have liked to coach me through the installation of a All Js Frankenlift II and jeepin by Als 4.5 A-Arms. I took a few notes and some pics as I did this installation with the idea of sharing this with Any CRD KJers that

to 110 ft lbs. Some places Ive seen recommend that a ratchet strap was needed to pull the clevis in far enough to insert the flag bolt did not have that problem. May only pertain to higher lifts on gasser models. Then install the top clevis bolt and torque to 45 ft lbs (seen both 60 & 45 for this). Do yourself a huge favor by putting a little anti seize on all of the bolts going back onto your jeep.

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Rear axle noise tech help needed

Hi all Sorry for long intro Im new here I spent a lot of time looking around forums and even more on FAQ searches etc. before posting. JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE coolant leak cant locate

I have a 2002 jeep liberty that just developed a coolant leak a few days ago. Its not constant until the car has been driven for a while. No leak at the upper and lower hoses. I cant see too well because of the cover that protects the bottom of the engine but I see a little green liquid around the crank shaft. The drips are counted at about one per second. It stops by morning time. There isnt a lot

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE 07 Liberty 4X4 fluid leak

My wife parked her 07 liberty at her work yesterday and she noticed a large puddle of fluid that came out on the concrete. When I got there I checked the radiator hoses and level. It all seemed fine. I tried to look at the fluid ( which had mostly disipated by then) and it looked and felt like synthetic oil of some kind. I crawled under the vehicle and the only wet area I could find was on the rear

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Liberty

Ive got a line on 1 from a friend of a friend. He says it needs trans axles a new TC and the rear end is bad. Its got 142K on it and the price seems right. Does anyone know of other issues or problem areas with these that I should look at Thanks

Update Put in new CVs prop shaft intermitant shaft front struts and ebrake shoes. Less than 1k into it and shes on the road with a couple hundred miles under her so far. Wifey loves it It does feel like the back end is bottoming out easy though and the kid said he just put new OME shock in it. Do they tend to run really soft Ive never run OME before.

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Loud thumping when in 4x4

Sorry if this is a repost I searched for a while and didnt see anything on this. I have a 2004 bone stock liberty that hasnt seen much off road action. It is at 120000kms and has been working great. The other day I decided to do some light off road activities. I came to a rocky hill and decided to put it in 4x4 high. The light came on I stepped on the gas and the loudest thumping noise came from the

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Did this liberty jump time

Ive been working on an 02 liberty sport with the 3.7 for a coworker of my wife. The right head had warped and the gasket had blown so I had the heads resurfaced and installed a new head gasket set. While I was re-installing the timing chains the primary tensioner broke so I got a new one. I remember thinking it seemed a bit loose but the tensioner was new so I figured maybe it would tighten up with

There is a thin metal oil restrictor plate on the back of the left(drivers) side hyd. tensioner. Be sure it goes back on correctly. All 3 chains have to go on the top gear. I used zip-ties to hold them on. The top gearall 3 chainsbottom gear all have to slide on at the same time AND you have to be sure the balance shaft timing mark is lined up with the back of the top gear. Like you dont have anything

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE KJ Starter Motor removal and replacement

The starter was showing signs of failure so I went to get a replacement at Napa. I jacked up the jeep and tried to perform the replacement. The starter had rust and corrosion all over it. What a headache it is to get this out (Disconnect exhaust pipe disconnect front drive shaft) Only then you can access the bolts to remove the starter. bottom line I could not get the bolts to budge on the exhaust

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Thunking noise when in 4WD

My 2002 liberty is making a pretty loud thunking noise when i use 4WD. It is especially noticeable when turning either way right or left. Noise seems to be coming from under the middle of the car not out by the front wheels. Anybody have any ideas Thanks BillE

No sweat always glad to help. The chain you are talking about could be part of the problem since it is in the tc and it is what sends power to the front driveshaft when you are in 4wd. It could be worn and might be skipping teeth inside the tc. A good way to check inside the tc is to drain the fluid and see if there are any metal shavings inside the tc which would be a solid indicator of extreme wear.

JEEP CHEROKEE Replaced Liberty

Just replaced my 2002 liberty with a 1996 Cherokee and its nice to drive a proper jeep again. The liberty just wasnt the same and bugged me from day one. What can be considered a reasonable lifespan for the Cherokee Mine has 184 000km on it and seems to be in good shape. There is a bit of vibration around 120kmh which is not from the tyres Thanks

Welcome to the XJ side I think you could reasonably expect to (almost) double the current reading on your odometer. Is yours an automaticmanual transmission Do you have four-wheel drive Keep an eye out for rust on the bottom though especially above the exhaust piping & beneath the rear seatsbench . . . moisture pools nicely right where the rear bench is bolted to the floor. If it ever begins to run

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Front End RattleVibration at 55 MPH

Hey there Since my last lift I am feeling an occasional vibration near the drivers side front end. It only occurs at 55 MPH and is usually (but not always) resolved by placing it into 4WD. Sometimes it shakes the rear view mirror. Any suggestions My front drive shaft is relatively new (12 months) and zero issues with the boots. I just replaced the brake pads and rotors. The tires have been rotated and balanced but no luck. A local jeep dealer gave up on it too. Have a good one

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE CRD EGR Valve Replacement

Thought I would share my experience on replacing the EGR valve on 2005 CRD. Mileage is 89000. This is the only engine repair needed since new. This is a repair a person can do with reasonable skills and a few tools. 1. EGR has three components. The valve the housing and the cooler. It is located under the air control valve on the right side of the engine. 2. Can only buy the valve from a Dealer or

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE 2003 Renegade Locked Engine Rebuild

I acquired a 2003 liberty last November (138K) that I was told by the previous owner has a locked up engine. They said they were driving down the interstate in Feb of 2013 and heard a loud bang and saw white smoke coming out of the tailpipe. They had it towed to a mechanic who told them he thinks one of the cylinders exploded. Turning the key you can hear the starter click and trying to engage the

I did not replace the convertor. When I pulled the engine I unbolted the motor mounts off of the engine block so I had a little more wiggle room in the compartment. I jacked up the front of the trans until it was touching the bottom of the firewall. I was able to slide the engine far enough forward and tilted up in the front that the convertor slid off the input shaft of the trans without much trouble.

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE 06 CRD KJ Tranny IssueQuestion for pros

Hi Several days ago my CRD began to vibrate harshly while cruising at 70mph. Before pulling to a stop the front u-joint on rear drive shaft failed. I assumed it was simple u-joint failure. Today I looked under vehicle and noticed a ton of ATF fluid. I started my CRD and sigificant pressurized streamflow of ATF fluid began to pour out of a small opening on the bottom of my starter motor. I do not know

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE how to diagnose a bad CV joint

I am having a knock come from my passenger front and it is only happening while I drive straight. only happens while I am braking around under 20mph. it is a single knock that doesnt happen everytime but more often than not. I have been searching the forums and alot has mentioned CVs. My boot is intact and I have pulled at everything I see to determine what (if anything) is loose. SO is there a close to fail-proof method for determining a bad CV joint

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Noises after lift

Alright Ive done 150 or so miles after my JBA lift and Ive got a noise that I cant really isolate. It happens when Im driving on wavy pavement and on segmented concrete roadways (you know the kind where you can hear your tires going across every segment). So to give some background the stuff I have replaced Front - Coilovers (incl. the nuts to secure them in the engine compartment) - Upper A-Arms -

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE How many have used the 7 year70k powertrain warranty

I am considering buying a liberty that came from Canada. I called DaimlerChrysler and spoke to a warranty person and they said theyd honor the 3 year36k mile warranty on the liberty. However they said that they wouldnt honor the 7 year70k mile powertrain warranty. How nervous should I be about not having the 770 portion of the warranty Id like to know how many of you have actually used the 770 powertrain

My gf has a 99 Dodge Ram Quad 4x4. When she bought it one commercial incentive was either a few hundred dollars or a 7100 extended powertrain warranty. She took the warranty thank god. At a little over 3 yrs. (and 78000 miles) her AC failed. Covered as part of the powertrain was the leaking AC evaporator which required removal of the entire dash to replace as well as rechaging the system etc. Im guessing

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Front Axel Leak

I notice that my front axel seems to be leaking around the drive shaft. I lifted my liberty in December and just put new tires on in February. Any suggestions on how I should approach this with my dealer They will probably say the lift and tires did it. Thanks LostRenegade

It seams to be coming from around the drive shaft and differential housing. However the entire bottom side of the differential housing is covered with oil. I am going to call my dealer and make an appointment. Lets see what they say.

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Crazy sounding tamberine noise from underneath

i have this noise as described in the thread title around the area of the transfer case and the front drive shaft i do believe. but due to the fact that i cant drive and hang from the bottom to listen to it i have no idea where its exactly coming form. it started this about a week ago. it doesnt affect the way it drives steers off road capabilities or anything of the nature. also no slipping or crunching

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Rear tire rub...

I have a 2.5 suspension lift and 31 tires. Everytime i hit a bump off road or have any articulation the tires hit the fenders and bottom out . Its pretty bad...any suggestions I was thinking i might be able to put in poly spacers in the back and longer shocks to lift it more.. has any one tried this

Yeah the set up is fit i had no problem with the rims. I had to cut some of the front inner fender because of the turning. i didnt think about the back bottoming out. i think the poly spcer would work i was just wondering about the pitch of the drive shaft because it will be 4 of lift plus what the 31 tires add in the rear

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE 2005 CRD Right Front End Clunk

Could really use some help. I have a clunk or click coming from the Right fender well. It occurs when I start from park both in reverse and drive. It is almost a snapping sound. Bought the vehicle used. Had the factory recall work done on the ball joints back in 2006. Any advice The previous owner said it has always been there.

First post welcome to JF - First check your front ball joints again both top and bottom. Next check your CVs and the intermediate shaft on the passenger side. Other things could be - like bolts loose on the strut or clevis on that side - odd noises sometimes come from the front sway bar bushings too but that sounds different. That would be my first points to look. How many miles on your CRD

JEEP LIBERTY CHEROKEE Coolant conundrum.

Hello all first post but been lurking for a bit. Last week I was changing the muffler on my wifes 03 (3.7 100500k) and while I was running the engine to check for leaks I noticed what appeared to be (green) coolant dripping from behind the muffler (at new clamp). It did not seem to be condensation at the time (certain it was green). immediately I begin to wonder if its a head related issue and was

JEEP WRANGLER II TJ Questions regarding purchase of 1st TJ

I am looking at a 2006 TJ with about 40000 miles at my local dealer (looked at yesterday when the dealer closed). It is a 2006 sport with the Dana 44. It has surface rust on the axle cover drive shaft all the break parts the steering componets up front and a little on the frame but no rust on the body at all. the rust is flaking a little on the diff cover but seems very shallow every where else. There

top. It is the 6 speed. The tires are toast but I would get them replaced anyway with a good all terrrain. This will be my daily driver and will be my first wrangler. I have a couple of specific questions. JEEP CHEROKEE Transfer case choice help

I am trying to decide which transfer case to use in my cherokee I have a choice between NP231 and the NP242. What would be the advantages of one over the other Is one stronger than the other one Also there will basically be no wheeling with this jeep just some towingDDmaybe transport for campingskiing type stuff. Most lift if any this would see is 2 inches if that factors in.

I own the 231 now since I only have 4hi and 4 lo. SO if I wanted to switch how much is the TC and do I have to modify the cab or will it slip right in I started taking pictures of my conversion for a possible future wrightup but most of them turned out too fuzzy so I quit snapping pictures to get the job done. Around the northeast the yards seem to want about 350 or more for a late model 242. liberty
