Nice job on the wiring. This is a mod thats on my shortlist however I want a mirror that also has Homelink buttons. Another option for the inside wiring for those of us who have older TJs without the plastic trim is to actually run it inside the windshield frame. Someone on here did it (Oman jeep maybe) and looked really good. He drilled a small hole in the bottom of the frame right above the mirror.

great work i have this mirror and the conector for about a year and never got into installing it thanks now i have all the info one thing I have an 03 tj when you remove the plastic windshield vent ( in front of the dashboart) there is a connector there it appears to be prewired for this type of mirrors does anybody know
The mirror compass involves wiring. So more money more effort. I prefer the compass in my head but I do have a small ball compass that I can stick on the windshield with a suction cup. There is also the Orienteering compass I keep in the glove box. Have had that since I was a young boy. My kids got me an electronic compass (batteries not included) that I can attach using the velcro right in front of

Got a compass that sticks on the corner of the mirror of my wifes VW the sensor attaches on the windshield. Wally World had them for 30 they are entirely self powered with a watch battery and they are calibrated by driving in a circle. I believe it was Bell branded but it looks factory save for the sensor which is invisible behind the mirror. The only down side is relatively short battery life. The
I installed the compass mirror on my 98. I added aftermarket stuff in it so it absolutely had nothing that I could use. Hardest part was to fish the wires through the windshield frame. I believe new TJs have the plastic surrounds around the windshield making the wire hiding much easier. If that is the case even if the mirror is not factory add on I cant imaging it being hard to do. Look behind the top center plastic windshield bezel and see if you have any wiring or pig tail. Michael K.

The mirror comes with a harness to connect to the connector underneath the defroster
you really dont. You might want to check before you start your installation and then find out you dont have the sensor you need. My 06 LJ was not prewired for the temperature function (and it only had the ambientengine temp sensor installed not the temp mirror sensor) but it was easy to add a junkyard mirror and sensor from a Suburban. Heres what the parts look like on the workbench And in the jeep
I mounted one (I think it was an Airfix or something like that) in my 86 ... the only place I could mount it without getting magnetic interference from the radio heater electrical system was between the rear view mirror and the headliner on the inside of the windshield with the supplied double sided tape. Worked really good there until my windshield leaked and flooded the works. Got a new windshield now so I should replace the compass
Having a FSM would help you diagnose the problem you have. First there are a set of instructions to diagnose the erratic compass problem. There is a procedure to degause the area surrounding the compass which will solve your issue there. I have followed the procedure and my compass in my 91 works perfectly. Second the manual states that if the vehicle is in an area where the temp changes significantly
Thanx SSCULLY I was hoping you would chime in. How do I determine which is pin 1 on the compass Would pin 1 be the one closest to windshield or the one closest to the inside of the cabin The connector on the compass runs sideways parallel with the side of the truck. I hope I was able to ask that clearly.
I am also attempting to clean under my cowl and I cannot get my the windshield wiper arm to disengage. Im driving a 2008 jeep compass. I remove the cap on the wiper assembly and then removed the bolt under that. I dont see anything described as above to release the arm. Any pointers Edit moving post to correct forum
I had to add the harness that plugs in at the mid top of the dash goes up the right side and across the windshield frame. All the other wiring was in place. I wanted the factory wiring since i had already bought the harness for my 2002 but never installed itadapted it. I had bought a compass templighthome link mirror from Ebay. I did have to change the connector at the mirror end of the factory harness.

Finished up the installation today and it worked out nice. I was able to snake the harness thru the windshield frame for a clean installation.

I didnt hide it to well . I just figured Oh well its a jeep and live with it . I wrapped it in tape and ran it where the roof meets the windshield frame. Maybe one of the newer TJs with the added trim pieces that cover the windshield frame would give ya an idea .
heck yeah...this rules. funny story i was at the auto glass replacement place (long story) but the short of it is i was getting my windshield replace and notice the same genk31 unit on display and have been looking to get an auto dimming mirror installed and decided to go ahead and have them install it when they did the windshield. will be getting my car back later today. cant wait to see the unit
I need to take photos of Chucks car. When I did his I found an easier way to install it on his compared to mine. remove both visors remove center pillar and right A pillar. removed the old mirror unplugged the existing harness and zip tied it aside plug in new harness to new mirror install new mirror on windshield tape wires to windshield frame following right A pillar pull off kidney panel on right
J this wont work for me since I have onstar Right... Quote Originally Posted by Deepbluegxp I need to take photos of Chucks car. AznJohn22 wrote any pictures of the install I want to get the mirror and install it myself. I have the SL model moonroof but no premium package. The autodimm would come handy. Hi AznJohn As far as I know there are no threads with pics showing a step by step install. I started putting one together that I hoped to have completed by now but my work schedule keeps getting in the way. I hope to complete
in with torx screws. The 2 wires for the sensor I ran through a grommit that goes out of the door pillar under the hood. My kit came with the cover for the wires that taped into the factory harness under the hood. Fished the sensor out behind the grill. The grill pops out pretty easily. The only struggle is with a couple of the grill clips. The final connection was a switched power feed for the compasstemp
Nevermind please delete this post. Apparently I disconnected the din plug from the back of the mirror body when I was cleaning the windshield. Guess it is better to leave my jeep dirty...
I have an 09 XL and after doing some searching the harnesses may be there but the sensor for the temp isnt. I ended up going and getting a new rearview mirror with temp compass and homelink integrated. Then it was just a matter of running the wiring which if youve done a stereo you can handle. It just requires power and running the wiring for the temp probe. The model I got was a Gentex 313. Its a

My 86 has wiring in the windshield header. There is a 3 pin connector just to the left of the rear view mirror mount. I think it was supposed to be for a vanity mirror in the drivers sun visor. I dont think the map light rear view mirror was an option in 86. I have one I got from somebody on eBay. It was supposedly from a S10 pickup. He claimed theyre all the same. He lied. I had to do major mods to

I am looking at getting one as well there are several on ebay under 100. Question for those of you that installed already...looks like the wire routing from the mirror under the headliner edge near the windshield would be easy as there is a gap but how about along the side rail Looks pretty flush there. How did you do it Also what about mounting to the windshield...did you leave the stock metal plate in place or take the whole thing off

Hhmmmm I never thought about getting one with a compass and temp in it I was just thinking it would be nice to have the map lights. What else did you have to hook up for the temp and compass Just an extra power wire
Check and reseat the connector on the back of the mirror. I had the same problem after I had my windshield replaced.
Mission accomplished gentleman. It was pretty easy. I will share with the 3 other Tacoma owners I work with... theirs may fail next Now I need a new windshield (rock crack)... been one damn thing after another this week... -Kevin
yes it should work if plugged back in. it may display cal for a while untill it calibrates itself. my guess is the windshield got replaced and they forgot to plug it back in.
Open the sunglass holder and there should be 2 bolts you need to remove. Then get your fingers between the edges of the console and the headliner on the windshield end and gently but firmly tug downwards. Be careful not to lose the clips that hold it in place.
Then you need to seperate the display from the console. There are 4 small pressure tabs that hold it in place be careful not to break these. edit If your a window tinter in Charlotte I will do it for you for the price of a windshield strip
I removed the one on my 03 SCrew to get power for my radar detector. There is one screw up front near the windshield. I did not notice mine at first either but I had almost stand on my head to see it. After you remove that one screw the back end is just held in with friction clips. Hope this helps.
