FIAT STILO Steering - track rod - how to change it

Hello to everybody. Have somebody changed the steering track rod yet See the picture what I am asking about. How to do it Need help Attached Thumbnails   __________________ Marian from Slovakia 2002 stilo 16 16V Activa - Novitec alloys F ehler I n A lle T eilen   Quote   07-03-2007   2 custard Status DEFCON Grumpy   Join Date Nov 2003 Location Edinburgh Posts 29917 Thanks 473 Trader

What is wrong with it That is a very difficult if not impossible part to change with the rack still on the car. If you remove the whole steering rack then its not a big problem of course but there just isnt room to turn it with it still in place. Which is why people just renew the rack usually if that part is worn This is what we call a track rod end or tie rod end This is what we call a tie rod - almost impossible to remove without removing the rack first Is the tie rod bent Are you getting a rattle though your steering on rough surfaces Many people think that its the tie rod which is causing the rattle but its more often the anti roll bar links anti roll bar links __________________ 02 stilo 1.6 Dynamic 3 door 99 Bravo 1.2SX Last edited by Deckchair5 07-03-2007 at 1741 .   Quote   07-03-2007   7 PNL Banned   Join Date Nov 2005 Location In my house Posts 13717 Thanks 243 Trader Rating 0   Re steering - track rod - how to change it And you also wont be able to buy that part as fiat only supply the complete rack and not the control arm as a seperate item

Here it is some small manual with picturesin case someone decide to walk on the hard way Needed tools --------------- - keys - MoSo4 spray or some other with acid and oil for easy take loose rust screws(or coca cola ) - jack and tripods for support the car - some beers to keep the mood - aspirin for after repair because youll hit yourself at least one time - chewing gum just to prevent loud swearing

FIAT STILO Tie rod threads

Im not sure of its proper name but the threads on my stilo inner steering track rod bar that comes from the steering rack (the bit the tie rod end screws on to) could ideally do with replacing due to corroded threads but I would like to first try re-cutting the threads. Does anyone know what size die I would need Failing that does anyone know if these rods can be changed in situ or does the steering

FIAT STILO Help No steering at all

went to work and pulled into the car park turned to park and nothing feels like the sterring knuckle has stripped its splines. error messages showed asr failure and airbag failure also some other faults. i cant believe it any help lads. car i stranded across the car park and will have to be recovered home. car is 04 abarth

steering alter course and a bit of a clunk as it moves. Track rod end makes steering alter whilst changing gear There can also be wear at the tie rod where it attches to the rack. This feels the same as above and gives a slackness to steering But these wouldnt make a loud bang on bumps like you say is happening to you. That sounds more like suspension or enginegbox mounts __________________ 02 stilo

FIAT STILO Steering arms

Hey guys Just been up to Quikfit to try and get my tracking adjusted. After 45 minutes of cocking around with a blow torch amongst other things they determined that they cant adjust the tracking as I need 2 new steering arms. I did a bit of searching on here and found people advising to change the whole steering rack. Is that even the right part Any idea where I can find what I need Cheers Johnny

If they were trying to do the tracking Its more likely that the track rod end(s) were seized onto the track rod (also known as tie rods). I believe that to fit new tie rods to the steering rack they need to be preloaded using shims so a replacement complete steering rack may be the best option. Very likely that they have been messed up by using mole grips on them instead of the correct size spanners. Minus8 thanked for this post

FIAT STILO Steering pulling to the left

Hi folks Hope you can help with a steering problem Ive had recently. The car is pulling to the left and is wearing the inside of the front offside tyre only. I had the tracking adjusted this week and it seems to have improved it but not entirely cured the problem. Ive moved the worn tyre from the front to the back to prevent further wear. My JTD has 57K on the clock had new shocks and springs a few

I would think your current tyre pressures for that wheel size would be fine and not be causing you any problems What did they set the tracking at do you know Dont worry if you dont I woud check your steering tie rod ends for wear. Just jack the car up and check for play by waggling the wheel forcefully from the 9oclock to 3pm postions. Amazing the number of steering algnment centres who dont check for wear there first before getting out the laser toys and lightening your wallet
