Its true that most of the forum members are from the US. But you will also find quite a few members from Europe here. Like me for example. I have a 525 TDS. And i would love to tell you where my glow plugs are located. But i simply dont know.. I havent had any need for finding out precisely where they are at yet. But i cant imagine it is that hard. Have you removed the top cover to see whats down there They will look big spark plugs.

The glow plugs on my 99 model are well hidden below the inlet manifold. You need to remove the manifold completely to see them. Its a two hour job to replace all the plugs and reinstall the manifold. Make sure to replace all 6 plugs at once. When one fails the other ones are bound to fail very soon. I was stubborn myself and only replaced the one that was open circuit and had two more fail the next

BMW SERIES 3 E90 E91 E92 E93 335d glow plugs

I was wondering about the 335d glow plugs and how you activate themsince theres no key to turn like in my Jetta tdi.Sorry if this has been discussed before. 2010 335d do to arrive end of Nov. cant wait. Thanks Art

I think if you need pre-heating they will engage before the car start just press start if there is a longer hesitation than normal that means that preheating was needed (also glow plugs should be indicated on the dash). There is no extra step needed. T

They start preheating when you unlockopen the door. Like your Idrive starts to boot up before you push the start button. In almost all cases my 335D will start immediately on the button. D.

In the manual it says that it will delay the start after pressing the start button as needed. That is the nice thing about the automatic start button...does it all on its own

Quote Originally Posted by tlak77 Interesting would be a kinda silly to have them preheat even if you dont intend to drive ... T Im with tlak and Grentz on this one. The glow plugs dont light up the moment the door is opened. The glow plugs are of the quick heat variety. If more than a quick glow is required then there is a delay in when the engine turns over after the Start button is pressed.

BMW SERIES 3 E90 E91 E92 E93 2006 320d Spark Plugs Broken

I sent my 320d to the shop yesterday to have the spark plugs changed. The first one got broken in the engine head but the rest has been able to be removed.. they still cant remove it they want to drill it but i think it will cause a problem later on. What do you think Can someone suggest something that i can tell them instead of allowing them to do it their way this is how the plug looks like after

In the USA we refer to this as a glow plug. It is used as a cylinder preheater for Diesel cycle engines. It comes on and glows steadily for a few seconds and then shuts off allowing for easier starting of the engine. A spark plug is an electrical device for gasoline (petrol) engines that ignites the fuel and air mixture for each revolution of the engine. It looks very different from a glow plug. You are in a difficult position with the glow plug broken off in the engine. Drilling out the old plug is definitely not a good solution but your alternatives are very few. Your fear of damage to your cylinder head is very reasonable. Unfortunately you may end up having to replace your cylinder head (EXPENSIVE). I view drilling and extracting the old glow plug as a last attempt before replacing the head. I hope your shop has good equipment they should also use a liquid release agent on the threading (Liquid Wrench or something similar). If your car is under warranty I would insist on a replacement cylinder head if the old glow plug cannot be easily removed. If your car is not under warranty you will have to pay for this repair. It never hurts to ask bmw for factory help. Good luck and let us know how this is resolved.

BMW SERIES 5 E39 Misfire Power loss on 530d sport glowplugs

Hi I have a some pwoer loss and my turbo whistles to a very high pitch and i have also noticed a slighly missrough idle on my E39 530d sport with about 130000miles on it. I took it to a indy and he put on his diagnotic tool and ran some tests he came back with a fault code for the glowplugs. He advised that i should replaced them all and the problem will go away he said the reason for the performance

I thought the glow plugs were only used when starting the car Once running the heat and compression ignited the diesel fuel.

Are you seeing smoke from the exhaust glow plugs would not cause the higher turbo whine. My guess is that it is something else. These symptoms sound similar to my buddys E39 right before his turbo failed.

Hi there is no smoke just a loss of power i spoke to the indy again this morning and he says just change them and you will see So going to get some later on this week and then update my post with results....this is strange...but hey i am no expert...and if the car is saying there is a problem with the glow plugs and it has gone into limp mode who i am i to challenge it -( hopefully i am not being lead up the garden path as they say over here

changed the glow plugs today and to my surprise the car is now running like a dream It just goes to show take the car to an expert and get a diagnostic done and change what ever the car is saying however daft silly or improbable it is. Also to get to the glow-plugs was a mission i had to remove the massive intake thing which connects to the intercooler pipe and EGR it had about 20 nuts and bolts holding it down.

BMW SERIES 3 E90 E91 E92 E93 DIY - Spark plugs N54

I didnt see a DIY for the N54 so adding some pics that I dont usually see on the net. I am a bit tardy with replacing the plugs as I am 10K miles over the bmw recommendation of 45K. 1) Remove microfiltercover (6 ea screws using 8MM socket) 2) Remove left and right covers over brake fluid reservoir and ECU box. 3) Release three tabs to remove cable strip and pull cable strip forward.

Nice DIY Bcube. I was interested until I realized I have no spark plugs on my 335. I also have no idea how long my glow plugs are good for...... Out of curiosity is it a bad idea to apply anti-seize to plugs that are going to stay in for 90K I always have on my previous vehicles.
