BMW SERIES 3 E46 Clutch - thought Throw-out bearing now Pilot Shaft bearing

Folks Heres the original thread httpwww.bimmerfest.comforumssho...68post6478268 The mechanic just left me a message stating that I now need a pilot shaft bearing. What is this They said they have to order it from bmw (that scares me) and I did a quick search here and I didnt find anything. Any advice Ive never needed ANYTHING that I couldnt search on this forum for

The pilot bearing (or bushing) is located on the end of the crankshaft the input shaft of the trans slips inside it. When they wear out it causes unwanted vibration at that junction. They are sometimes a pain in the ass to remove.

BMW SERIES 3 E90 E91 E92 E93 Engine Bearing Life - Yow

The fragility of pre-2009 Boxter & Cayman engines is the stuff of dark legend....now I wonder about bmw mills Intermediate shaft (IMS) failure often leads to engine replacement. Heres what LN Engineering says about this bearing related fail Porsche In addition conventional class 1 bearings like the 52100-series bearing steel used in the factory bearings is typically only stable to 250F suffering from

As my wife got a Boxster for our 25th anniversary (which we still have) I have looked into this extensively. You are totally right in that the Boxster (and 911 for that matter) engines have had extraordinary problems with the Intermediate shaft bearings failing (early ones also had bad problems with the cylinder sleeves coming loose - not a good thing.) This problem persisted from the original engines (1997) until around the engine was revised (in around 2005). However those bearings are not the same as the crankshafts rod and main bearings (which dont fail unusually in any motor but early E46 M3s ). The IMS bearings are roller-bearings that support the IMS in the crankcase at each end which is driven by a chain off the crank. The IMS then drives the camshafts of the flat-6. The problem is that the roller bearing assembly was not built tough enough and doesnt have enough lubrication. Consequently the cage fails and youre out a 20K motor. Fixing the problem by replacing the IMS bearings with beefier ones is only a partial fix (usually successful). The only way you can tell if theyre about to fail is oil analysis looking for metal bits. Note that Porsche also has condition-based oil change intervals that are quite comparable to bmws (15K) so changing it more often than recommended is mandatory.

BMW SERIES 5 E39 528 clutch job gone bad... am I hosed

First things first... this is not my car Im working on. I volunteered my garage and my prior experience dropping trannies to help my brother replace the clutch on his 96 528. Anyway things seemed to be going great... dropped the old tranny removed old clutch installed new clutch whee Had some trouble getting the tranny realigned when mating it to the engine but that finally came together. Heres where

It sounds to me like you forced the tranny in and hosed the pilot bearing (not sure if bmw has this but all other cars do) which goes into the crankshaft. Seems like all the symptoms. So your first line of business is to get the tranny seperated from the motor...as you realize. Hopefully you dont f up the tranny in doing so but you forced it on now youre going to have to force it off. Dontbe surprised

BMW SERIES 5 E39 Flywheel andor clutch source for 540i6 (and some questions)

Hello all I am in desperate need of a good (preferably new) flywheel and maybe a clutch. Does anyone know of a cheap source for either of these for a six-speed 540i with an M62 engine I have a good clutch pressure plate etcetera sitting here from an E39 M5 (just not the flywheel). Can the M5 clutch be fitted to any M62 (the gearbox is also from an M5 by the way) Can a used clutch be re-installed The

The 5406 tranny is the same as the M5. You can re-use a clutch disc but unless it has very few miles on it I wouldnt bother the labor to replace it (even if you are doing it yourself) isnt worth it. The locking plate you are talking about is on a new pressure plate see pic. If you are trying to use an old pressure plate you will need to get the tool to reset the self adjusting mechanism in it. The tool probably costs more than a new pressure plate. You will also need an alignment tool to center the clutch disc a special tool to get the flywheel bolts out a standard T60 wont work. Dont forget to change the pilot shaft bearing in the back of the crankshaft maybe the rear main seal too the clutch release bearing and shaft etc. I changed the seal on the input shaft of the tranny and the rear main seal too. None of them were leaking the cost in minimal compared to the labor to pull the tranny again. Do you have AutoZone stores They sell OEM flywheels clutch discs and pressure plates a lot cheaper than bmw.
