I would like to know if I can replace the closed system radiator on my 1987 XJ (with the radiator cap on the coolant bottle) to a later version cooling system with the cap on the radiator and a conventional coolant overflow bottle. JEEP CHEROKEE XJ 1987 Cherokee - New OwnerVictim )

Hi all I will be a newbie to this forum but most likely a frequent one. Long story... came across a good deal on a 1987 v6 XJ. I have no idea about jeeps and have never owned one. I am pretty excited to tinker with the jeep platform. 1987... Thoughts Things I need to look at The steering is a bit loose and wonky. I absolutely love the spartan nature of this interior. Manual everything except transmission.

JEEP CHEROKEE XJ 1987 Cherokee Overflow tank

I have to replace my plastic overflow tank and cap atleast 2 times a year to maintain the correct pressure in my cooling system. The plastic starts to expand and the cap starts to leak etc... I have been looking around to see if anyone has made custom tanks that have maybe thicker plastic or a tank made of metal. Somthing to last me longer then 6 months. This is for a 1987 jeep cherokee. Just wondering if anyone else had the same problems and if anyone has any ideas. Thanx

I converted my 88 to an open system. On the other two I had a local racing radiator shop make me a couple of overflow tanks out of aluminum and Im using a 16 lb cap. Paid like 60 each but at least no more worries. The shop that did it for me said hes done probably a hundred for cherokee owners. He has a template already made up and could mass produce them I guess.

Convert it to an open system...especially if you have cooling components that are old anyways and could use being replaced. Its ultimately a radiator heater valve and hoses with some wiring for the e-fan and youre done. Ive got my system priced out at 320 for pretty much brand new everything (excluding coolant cost).

my only regret with converting to a open loop is that i didnt do it sooner i just changed out the radiator and keep the bottle 4 an overflow

JEEP CHEROKEE 1987 Factory Electric Fan Help Needed

The electric fan is not coming on at warmer temperatures (210). I checked the voltage at the connector when it should be on and I get nothing. The fan works if I run some direct jumper wires to it so I know it should work if I was getting voltage. The Hanes manual I have (I know. I need a FSM) only covers 88 and I cant locate anything specific for an 87 online. There isnt a specific fan fuse but we

The fan switch is advertised to close at 180-198 degrees. But the switch is located on the cold side of the radiator so 210 degrees on the gauge could easily be to cool to actuate the switch. I have an 88 and it is incredibly rare that the aux fan actuates based on the temp switch.

My 88 XJ Aux. fan comes on at 215 - 217 and cools down OK. Check your temp sender (In radiator next to fan) That is what trips the fan circuit through ECM.

On an 88 the ECM has no involvement whatsoever in the operation of the aux fan on the basis of temperature. (The ECM does energize the fan relay when ac is selected if so equipped.) The component in the radiator is a switch not a sender.

JEEP CHEROKEE Over Heating Problem

Ok i have been having an over heating but it only starts to over heat when i turn on the AC. So i am wondering if this is because my AC isnt charged all the way or if i should just get a lower temp thermostat like one that is 195. I live down here in AZ and it gets pretty damn hot about 105 - 115 and it gets annoying to have to turn off my AC to let it cool off cause i dont want to blow a head gasket

I have a 1987 cherokee with the 4.0 liter inline 6 cylinder. About 2 years ago I had an overheating problem. I changed the thermostat and coolant but it did no good. I then had the fan clutch changed. It looks like a silver disk attached to the mechanical fan not the electrical fan. It did no good as well. The jeep was still overheating. I had it at the dealership to replace the water pump which had

JEEP CHEROKEE 2001 Cherokee manual trasnmission

Hello there....I need your opinion on a cherokee with manual transmission. I am planning to pull a trigger on 2000-2001 MY since they have those nice plastic flares (spoilers) and have the most HP I am coming from a totally different scene and this would be my first SUV. My plan is not to go the typical jeep owner road ( lifts kits big mud wheels) but rather try to transform it to look somewhat close

NV3550 manual transmission (some say its better than the AX-15 others say it is not). The 4.0 these years uses coil packs instead of a distributor and has 193 hp. The 0331 head on these years had a casting flaw that makes in prone (NOT guaranteed) to crack between cyl 3 and 4. 1991-1999 uses the AX-15 manual transmission (very reliable) and has a 4.0 with 190 hp. 1989.5-1990 also uses the AX-15. 1987-1990

JEEP CHEROKEE 89 Cooling system questions
